After all these years, I still can't believe that I have the chance to release a proper "Best Of" album. This compilation spans my six solo Rock albums, and it contains all my popular and personal favourite Rock tracks. It's amazing how the years have passed, but I am happy that I've been able to create music with all my love and passion throughout this time. It has been a dream to put this collection together, and I hope you enjoy the chance to revisit those albums with me.
I wrote 'EYE OF THE STORM' during the 'Colours in the Dark' sessions, but I didn't feel that it was right for that album, so I decided to save it for a special occasion and this compilation is it. This powerful, previously unheard song has a deep feeling of closure within it and was influenced by the two most important countries in my life Finland and Argentina. I took inspiration from Finland's Jean Sibelius, and also from the famous style and sound of Argentina's Astor Piazzolla, for an epic battle that represents the internal struggle within me about finding my place in the world.
'I WALK ALONE' was one of four tracks that I picked from the 500+ demos sent to me by the label for 'My Winter Storm'. I fell in love with it straight away and the chorus really grabbed me. The title for ...Storm' came from this song, and there is a lot of positivity in the track. It is also where I got the idea of calling all my fans and supporters "My Winter Storm." They have always been there and still are, and despite the title, I do not feel that I walk alone, and I never am because "My Winter Storm" is always there.
I must confess that I initially hated the first demo ideas for what would become 'DIE ALIVE' because it started out as a very clichéd Power Metal track. A lot of work went into the song, and I made some notable twists, and now both the track and the story behind it mean a lot to me. It was heavily inspired by the author Paulo Coelho's pursuit of fulfilling one's dream. 'Die Alive' has become the motto for my way of life and tattooed on my arm. I need to live each day to the fullest so that when the time comes for me to go, I have lived so I die alive.
I wanted to include 'ENOUGH' because it was originally released as part of a "Special Edition" version of 'My Winter Storm' and not available everywhere at the time. Chances are that less people have heard it. The song was recorded in just one day in Buenos Aries by the live line-up after our South American tour dates. While the recording was a joyful experience, the mixing was something of a nightmare. I was quickly back on the road again, so I couldn't be sat next to Toby Wright and checking the mixes. He faced the unfair situation of receiving opposite directives from me and from the record company. If I'm honest, I do not like how it sounds, but it was part of the learning process and my beginnings.
My initial idea for the solo in 'FALLING AWAKE' was to approach the legendary Joe Satriani to see if he was interested in contributing to the song, and I was delighted when he agreed. I asked Julian Barrett (my guitarist) to record a solo that I could send as a guide, and Joe sent back this amazing solo just a few days later. However, I was so impressed with Julian's solo that we used it in another version. As if that wasn't great enough, my U.K. label then enquired whether I would be interested to have a third solo from Jason Hook (ex-Five Finger Death Punch), and as a fan of F.F.D.P., I instantly agreed. That is how this song ended up with three different solos and three different versions."
'UNTIL MY LAST BREATH' was written just after Michael Jackson passed away. In the weeks that followed, I thought about how sad it was that sometimes we do not appreciate an artist, their art, and their unquestionable talent as much while they are actually still alive. He was the King of Pop and created some beautiful music that will be eternal. It was revealing to witness the change of opinion from both the media and the fans about Michael, and 'Until my Last Breath' was about that. Personally, I want to sing until my last breath, to make people happy with my voice and my art.
We were already well into the production of 'What Lies Beneath' when Universal approached me with 'I FEEL IMMORTAL' and wanted me to record it. The label was very keen on it and felt it was a strong song to be released as the main single (after 'Falling Awake'), but that resulted in a considerable difference of opinion within the record company; some other territories wanted to go with 'Until my Last Breath' instead (myself included). We eventually released both songs simultaneously as the leading single in different countries, but sadly, putting out two different singles at the same time didn't work at all.
'VICTIM OF RITUAL' is about people who are victims of the various routines that most of us have. Those rituals, habits or familiar ways are sometimes very hard to get rid of, and it can be difficult to turn the page and go forward. In my song, the victim did make that change and I can feel a burst of energy when I play the song live!
There is another side of being a public person, and '500 LETTERS' is all about that darker aspect. I began to receive these letters, written in pencil, every two weeks at my home address, and the writing style and actual words (full of sex and violence) were very aggressive. The writer always mentioned his real name, so we knew who he was. He did this for more than a year and we eventually got the police involved; when they went to his house, they found more than 500 letters already written and sealed in their envelopes, piled up ready to be sent. Despite something like this, I will not allow it to change me or what I do because I love my fans.
During the creation of 'Colours...', I wrote a song about my relationship with Finland and that became 'NEVER ENOUGH'. It was about not being a prophet in your own country. That is what I was battling back then, and I felt like, "Come on, I love my country and I would love to be able to be recognised there."
'INNOCENCE' was written as a way of expressing my gratitude for the Classical music that has given me this life. I came from such a different background, but it has been there from the beginning and integral to who I am today. I was thrilled to collaborate again with an old friend, and it still gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it. Izumi Kawakatsu is one of the most talented lead pianists around, and graced us with her rendition inspired by Frédéric Chopin.
'DEMONS IN YOU' is another song with some impor- tant guest contributions. I asked Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy) to work with me on this track because she is the opposite of my operatic singing style. Alissa is absolutely phenomenal, and I felt 'Demons in You' needed her strong voice. Kevin Chown (my bassist) and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) were in a band together, and he asked Ime whether I would like Chad to play on any of my tracks of course, I said yes! Chad is a great guy, who's very funny and warm, and having him in the song gave me the freedom to play around with the funky R.H.C.P. trademark.
There is a lovely memory behind 'DIVA'. We were in Antigua and walking around the local harbour when we saw this old boat stored outside the water. The local people told me that it was used in the 'Pirates of The Caribbean' movies, and that quickly inspired me to write a pirate themed song. I playfully described the last walk of the 'Diva' on the ship before being pushed out by the rats on board. Any resemblance to reality is pure coincidence.
The riff for 'DEAD PROMISES' was the starting point for this song. I had no idea that the track would eventually become a duet until it was ready. Everything sounded good after I had recorded my vocals, and that was when the inspirational duet idea suddenly popped into my head. Björn "Speed" Strid is one of the greatest vocalists out there, and it was an honour to have him sing on this track. Inspired by the aggressive guitar tones, 'Dead Promises' displays all my anger towards those persons whose word you cannot trust.
'TEARS IN RAIN' was a strangely prophetic title because the video shoot certainly produced a lot of tears. I wanted a video that could empower women to fight for their dreams, and we came up with an idea that involved a roller derby team. Two days before filming, I fell badly while practicing and dislocated my coccyx. The doctor put it back in place, and I flew to London the next day, with the video shoot the day after. I was in severe pain and every time these incredible women crashed in on me, I saw stars and birds circling around my head. People have said I was a good actress in that video. No, I wasn't.... I was just in so much pain!
'YOU AND I' closes out this compilation with a bit of a "wow" moment. I needed a lovely ballad at the time, and part of the inspiration for this song came from looking back at the past. Nowadays, there are precious few, if any, great ballads like the ones that came out between the late seventies and the nineties. I am talking about those fantastic love songs with big, glorious melodies for great singers. For this track, I wanted to pay homage to all those great ballads of my youth.
It's been an incredible experience so far and I want to say thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way, but especially to "My Winter Storm." You are. the reason for everything that I do, and it is because of you that I have the life that I do. I will forever be grateful to you all, and I hope to see you again on the road.
