Ave Maria is a traditional Catholic prayer dedicated to the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, asking for her intercession. The prayer forms the basis of the Rosary and is used within Roman Catholicism and other groups in the Catholic tradition of Christianity. Most of the text of the Ave Maria can be found in the salutation given by the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary at the Annunciation, in the Gospel of Saint Luke (LUKE 1:28).

AVE MARIA,
GRATIA PLENA,
DOMINUS TECUM.
BENEDICTA TU IN MULIERIBUS,
ET BENEDICTUS FRUCTUS VENTRIS TUI, IESUS.
SANCTA MARIA,
MATER DEI,
ORA PRO NOBIS PECCATORIBUS, NUNC,
ET IN ORA MORTIS NOSTRAE.
AMEN.

There are over 150 known language versions of the Ave Maria and it has been set to music and words in over 4000 songs, some of which kept the original prayer as words while others used a different text than the traditional one. The most prominent case is Franz Schubert's lied Ellen Dritter Gesang (Ellens Gesang III D. 839, Op. 52 n.° 6), composed as a setting for Sir Walter Scott's epic poem The Lady of The Lake. It is not actually a religious piece, but it's known as Ave Maria because the opening words are "Ave Maria". The Latin version of the Ave Maria is now so frequently used with Schubert's melody that it has led to the misconception that he originally wrote the melody as a frame for the Ave Maria.

We can find compositions from Charles Gound, Antonín Dvorák, Giusep- pe Verdi, César Cui, Mozart, Saint-Saëns, Rossini, Brahms and others many among the musicians that decided to venture into Marian Music.

This album contains 12 Ave Maria songs by very different composers.

AVE MARIA / TOSTI • + *
1
Composed in 1881 by Francesco Paolo Tosti, Italian (1846-1916). Tosti is remem- bered for his light, expressive songs. His style became very popular during the Belle Époque and is often known as salon music. Born in Naples, he established himself in Rome, moving in 1880 to London, where he became singing teacher to the royal family and in 1894 professor of singing at the Royal Academy of Music. He was naturalised in 1906, and knighted in 1908, finally returning to Italy, where he spent his final four years.

AVE MARIA OP2 / VON KOTHEN •
2
Composed in 1885 by Axel Von Kothen, Finnish (1871-1927). Composer, vocal teacher, music critic, music journal editor and concert singer, Von Kothen showed his musical gifts early and published his first song, Ave Maria, at the age e of fourteen.

AVE MARIA / POPPER +
3
David Popper, Czech (1843-1913) was a Bohemian cellist remembered for his cello compositions. These include four concertos now seldom heard in the concert hall, and a number of better known salon pieces. The song is attributed to Popper as the intellectual responsible that arranged and transcript the song in 1898, while the original credits for the composition belong to Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842).

AVE MARIA / SAINT-SAËNS * + *
4
Composed in 1880 by Camille Saint-Saëns, French (1835-1921). A gifted child, composer, organist, conductor and pianist of the Romantic era. He wrote many others Ave Marias as well. His rigorous musical language is founded on formal balance, knowledge of Germanic polyphony and a very Romantic virtuosity.

AVE MARIA (TANTI ANNI PRIMA) / PIAZZOLLA +
5
Composed in 1984 by Astor Piazzolla, Argentine (1921-1992). Piazzolla was a tango composer, bandoneon player and arranger. Piazzolla's fusion of Tango with a wide range of other recognizable Western musical elements was so successful that it produced a new individual style transcending these influences. This Ave Maria was a gift from Piazzolla to the Italian singer Milva. "Sing it when you feel it's time", he told her. With over 60 years old, she sang it in 2001.

AVE MARIA / BACH-GOUNOD 8
6
Composed in 1859 by Charles François Gounod, French (1818-1893). Gounod wrote one of the most famous Ave Maria. The piece consists of a melody by the French Romantic composer Charles Gounod especially designed to be superimposed over the Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV 846, from Book I of J.S. Back's The Well-Tempered Clavier, written 137 years earlier.

AVE MARIA / MASCAGNI + 8 *
7
Composed in 1890 by Pietro Mascagni, Italian (1863-1945). Mascagni was as a composer most noted for his operas. This Ave Maria is based on the intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, a play framed in the Verismo (realism). In time, the Ave Maria became a noted popular work due to its touching and memorable melody.

AVE MARIA / FARKAS •
8
Composed in 1994 by Ferenc Farkas, Hungarian (1905-2000). Farkas was professor of composition at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. His work has its origin in the Hungarian folk music and Italian neoclassicism as well as in the dodecaphony and includes a wide variety of different genres.

AVE MARIA / CACCINI * *
9
One of the most popular Ave Maria, misattributed to Giulio Caccini. The piece was actually composed 1970 by Vladimir Vavilov, Russian (1925-1973). Vavilov, who had a habit of assigning his compositions to famous composers, recorded the piece in 1970 and attributed it to "Anonymous" on the album. Following Vavilov's death, Caccini's name was erroneously attached to the piece in subsequent recordings and performances.

AVE MARIA / HOPPÉ * + *
10
Composed in 2000 by Michael Hoppé, English (b. 1944). Michael Hoppe is a Grammy nominated composer with an exceptional melodic talent, and distinctive evocative style. He has extensive background in both pop and classical music, which his recordings reflect.

AVE MARIA OP. 59 / WIDOR •
11
Composed in 1884 by Charles-Marie Widor, French (1844-1937). Widor was the organist at Saint-Suplice in Paris for nearly 64 years. Widor was made a chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1892, named to the Institut de France in 1910, and was elected "Secrétaire perpetuel" (permanent secretary) of the Académie des Beaux- Arts on 18 July 1914, succeeding Henry Roujon.

AVE MARIA / TURUNEN • *
12
Composed in 2009 by Tarja Turunen, Finnish (b. 1977). Turunen. wrote this Ave Maria for her Christmas concert tour. The piece is inspired by classical known Ave Marias, but written with a contemporary and popular approach in mind.

LAKEUDEN RISTI CHURCH (also known as Cross of the Plain) is part of an Administrative and Cultural Center that Alvar Aalto designed for the city of Seinäjoki, Finland.
The competition for the design was held in 1951, but the construction did not take place until 1957-1960. The church seats 1200 people, the gallery an additional 124 people.
The hall of the church is in the shape of a cathedral. The ceiling that narrows and lowers gradually toward the choir, and the floor slanting toward the altar- constructed of white and grey Italian marble- give the churchgoer an impressive view and feeling.
The lamps and the crowns in the hall as well as the silver communion supplies, and altar cloths were manufactured according to special blueprints. Alvar Aalto designed everything in the building: from the exterior to the interior including the stained glass windows and the organ front.

THE LAKEUDEN RISTI ORGAN today is a 53-stop four-manual instrument by the Kangasala organ builders and, instead of being enclosed in a traditional casing, its pipework is integrated with the architecture of the church, being stunningly arrayed in geometric patterns across the organ gallery. The church's acoustic was also carefully planned (modelled after Medieval cathedrals), and is regarded as the finest in Finland, giving the organ a full, rich sound with great focus of detail. The Germanic neoclassical constitution of the organ, aided by modern blowers and computer-based registration memories, allows its use for a wide range of organ music.

Builder: Kangasala organ builders 1960, op. 655
Renovation, revoicing, memory system: Organ builder Veikko Virtanen 2006.
Disposition: Elis Mårtenson, Tauno Äikää, Aimo Kortesmäki, organ builder.
Electro-pneumatic key action, electric stop action, registration memory system with 4000 presets.

ALVAR AALTO (1898-1976). Finnish architect, designer and professor, is one of the notable innovators of architecture and interior decoration. Through his architecture, Alvar Aalto wanted to demonstrate that the balance between man and buildings is possible to achieve without breaking the connection between human being and nature.
It was Aalto's ability to coordinate those three components that discloses the beauty of his work. Those who know Finland's cultural heritage would see an essentially Finnish element in Aalto's architecture.
